Mumbai often hailed as the cricket capital of India. It boasts a lineage of cricketing venues, with Wankhede Stadium being one of the most prominent. Its journey commenced as a resolution to a ticket allocation dispute between the Cricket Club of India (CCI) and the Bombay Cricket Association (BCA). Named after Barrister Sheshrao Krishnarao Wankhede, the stadium opened its doors for the first Test match in the 1974-75 season when West Indies toured India.

Legendary Encounters and Heroic Innings

Over the years, Wankhede has witnessed some of the most unforgettable cricketing moments.

  1. Clive Lloyd’s monumental 242 in India’s first-ever Test at the venue set the tone.
  2. Sunil Gavaskar’s 205 against the West Indies, Alvin Kallicharan’s 187 in the same game, and Ian Botham’s all-round brilliance in 1980 are etched in cricketing folklore.
  3. Vinod Kambli’s 224 against England in 1992-93 and Ravi Shastri’s six sixes in an over remain legendary feats at this ground.

The Wankhede pitch, composed of local red soil, offers a unique blend of bounce and spin. Swing bowlers thrive during the early hours, while spinners come into play on the final days of Test matches. Sachin Tendulkar’s Legacy Immortalized at Wankhede

At the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, a pause was taken to honor and immortalize its favorite son, Sachin Tendulkar. Almost a decade ago Tendulkar had bid adieu to what is arguably the most illustrious career in cricket. Over the years, the stadium has commemorated the master blaster by naming a stand after him. And now, as he turned 50, they have honored the only cricketer with a hundred international centuries with a statue on his home ground.

Designed by Pramod Kamble, the grand sculpture is strategically placed between the Sachin Tendulkar Stand and the Vijay Merchant Pavilion. It showcases Tendulkar playing a lofted stroke straight down the ground. Reminiscent of those mesmerizing shots that had fans dancing in Sharjah 25 years ago.
