The team was established following an invitation to tender for two new sides by the governing council of the IPL in August 2021. The team’s name, Lucknow Super Giants, was chosen through a competition launched by the team.

Despite being a new entrant in the IPL, the Lucknow Super Giants have shown promising performance. In its debut season, LSG qualified for the playoffs, finishing third in the table. The team’s success can be attributed to strategic team-building and the inclusion of key players. KL Rahul, a renowned Indian cricketer, was drafted as their captain for ₹17 crore, making him the joint highest-paid player in the league. The franchise also bought Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi, adding substantial strength to their team. In their second season of IPL, LSG again finished third in the table, qualifying for the playoffs. They faced the Mumbai Indians in the eliminator match but were unfortunately knocked out.

Low Point

In the initial phase of their debut season, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis was unavailable due to an ongoing Australian series. This was a significant setback for LSG as Stoinis was expected to play a crucial role in the team’s middle order and bowling department. English pace bowler Mark Wood was also unable to join the team because of an injury, leading to the drafting of Australian bowler Andrew Tye. These instances have added to the team’s challenges, marking the low points
