In a surprising turn of events, Dominica has withdrawn from hosting T20 World Cup matches, citing the inability to complete venue preparations for Windsor Park in time for the tournament. The decision, announced by the Dominica government, impacts the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the USA.
Windsor Park, one of the shortlisted venues, was slated to host one group match and two Super 8 games, pending completion of required upgrades. The government’s statement acknowledged efforts made to enhance practice and match venues but revealed that timelines provided by contractors posed challenges in meeting the stipulated timeframe.
The Dominica government expressed regret but deemed it imprudent to commit to hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 under these circumstances. Despite Dominica’s acclaimed history of hosting international cricket, ensuring the success of the tournament took precedence.
Johnny Grave, CEO of Cricket West Indies (CWI), acknowledged Dominica’s withdrawal, expressing understanding and looking forward to future collaborations. The CWI, in partnership with the ICC, is actively working on confirming the T20 World Cup schedule.
